## Homepage Biological Modeling

This page provides practical information about the MSc course Biological Modeling. The course schedule tells you which lecture hall we use, what material will be covered, what exercises to make, and which papers to read. This schedule page reads a Google-calender that you can also download to your phone via this link. The first meeting is Monday 3 September in BBG-223 at 9:00.

We will work with a number of readers and manuals. These will be sold on the fist day of the course (for 20 Euro). They are also available on the web. Start with downloading the main reader, the its answer book, the math reader, the Grind tutorial, a formula page, and a short Introduction to R. Later in course we will distribute a printed set of papers.

The first five weeks you will learn to develop and analyze mathematical models. The sixt week is free for preparation of the exam on Friday 12 October. During this exam you are allowed use the page with formulas and the math reader.

During the computer practicals we will work in R and RStudio, using a R-script called grind.R. Install RStudio and R on your laptop, or work in the UU MyWorkPLace environment. The models that we use are given here.

The first part of the course will also cover some math, and you will learn to work with matrices, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors, to ultimately formulate the Jacobi matrices enabling us to test the stability of steady states.

The second part of the course consists of a seminar and a project. On Friday 2 November we have an exam about about **all material** covered in the course, including the papers we read in the seminar. This is an "open book" exam.
For the project we typically start with a recent paper, and you are supposed to repeat the analysis of that paper, read more papers on the topic, and do some additional scientific research. On Friday november 9 you will give lecture about your project,
and hand in a written report.
Read these tips about writing reports.

I hope this will be an interesting and challenging course for you!
